Using On-board Cameras for Dashcam?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has given any thought to whether or not the existing 4 cameras on the car can be used for dashcam purposes? I am seriously considering getting a dashcam but I don't like having wires exposed and visibility hampered by having something mounted on the windshield.

I figure, if the car already has 4 existing cameras which are already hardwired to the car's system / screen, how much work would it be and what would it take to allow the car's system to use the cameras as a recording device that can store on a USB stick or the onboard HDD? I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this.... I'm guessing it would involving getting into the car's programming to find a way to do this...

It would be awesome if the car had this feature, and all future cars start incorporating this since there are so many people nowadays with dashcams. With the Infiniti's all around view, it would take 'dashcam' to a whole another level with 360 view of accidents if/when they happen!

Thoughts?

Even if it could be done, the resolution on those cameras isn't really sufficient for what you want. You should be able to wire most any dashcam into the power from the rearview mirror, effectively eliminating all the wires.
I spoke with the guy that makes the bypass module for the navigation system so that you can use the navi while driving about this one. He did this but the resolution and camera angle just wasn't good enough to be useful.
I have a HD dashcam I used in my old car and wouldn't mind hooking it up in my QX60 but like Sinecure mentioned, I'd like to power it right off the rearview mirror. In my old vehicle I powered it off a 12vdc outlet that was on the top hidden inside of a tray that had a pop open cover (Chevy Volt). If anyone does it, please post how you did it, which wires, all that good stuff.
From the car maker I think it should at least be an option to check off when ordering

Hmm didn't realize the resolution was no good. I guess it looks alright on the 8" screen in the dash but not so much on an actual monitor. HD Dashcam it is!

I'm also interested to see a DIY on this :D Any volunteers?
What is the novelty or advantage of a dash cam? I've never really heard of one before that's why I ask.
Plus, you might get some great footage like in this compilation:
