trip to Lake Tahoe, great MPG

took a trip to south lake Tahoe, 400 miles RT, with some local driving while there... 1 tank of gas for the entire trip, and average MPG was 25! very impressed with the qx60 fuel efficiency....

just to be fair, my 2.5T Volvo xc90 AWD carved through the twisties better than the FWD QX60.... but the XC90 only got about 19mpg.....

Did you take Highway 50 or 80? How did it handle in the curves and in the altitude? I have the JX and can manually shift the transmission which really makes driving winding roads a lot of fun, plus give better control. I can't remember if the QX60 with the XTronic CVT can be manually shifted? Just curious.

Both will have the manual shift mode.
That is good mileage. Is the avg 25 mpg from the internal trip computer?
I'm headed up to Taho via 50 in a few days for the Presidents day and will be there all next week.
We'll be fully loaded with gear with plenty of driving through the Tahoe region mtns.
I'll update when we return.

And yes the QX60 CVT can be manually shifted - which I'll be using and comparing with full auto to see how it behaves.

My wife and I are envious. We spent many days in Tahoe over the past winters and miss that area very much. I'd love to drive 50 in the JX. Its the perfect highway to take a cruise. Enjoy the trip.

I took the 50, it handled OK in the curves, there were some body roll ....and the CVT's weakness with power delivery showed when trying to pass big rigs....

still a great ride nonetheless....
that is good mileage. how many passengers?
just a solo driver and his snowboard for most of the trip...:)
Yes, I had the MPG info shown on the screen for most of the trip...

When I got into Tahoe, the MPG average went down to around 22. coming back, it climbed up to 25.

I'll have to play with the manual shift mode more in the future...

in the past, I went to Tahoe many times with my XC90 AWD, and it really shined in the curves... (salesguy told me Volvo's AWD system was made by the same vendor that provided the SH-AWD system for the MDX) even on icy/snowy roads, the Volvo grabbed the pavement very well...

It would've been interesting to see how the AWD QX60 handled in the curves...

Back from Tahoe - definitely spring skiing conditions - need more snow!

Drive up to South Lake Tahoe via US50 was uneventful - packed with 4 people and clothing/food/gear for 5 days.
Handling was ok going up through the US50 curves, some body roll and steering was a bit light. Power when passing large trucks was adequate. Switched over to manual shift mode and the CVT delivered smooth power to pass. Not quick, but we were pretty full with a cargo box on top. Averaged 20 mpg driving up to cabin, around South Tahoe and to the various ski resorts.
The mpg was calculated hand - not the trip computer as it reported 22.8mpg

Driving home - down the mountain via US50 - the mpg was much better. Calculated 27.2mpg coming home and the trip computer displayed 29.1mpg

Overall a great ride and beautiful drive through El Dorado forest and around Lake Tahoe. We're very happy with the QX60 and we'll be headed back up to Tahoe in a few weeks - hopefully get to drive it through some snow this time around.
