Nissan recalls 3.5 million vehicles for faulty air bags

"The system may improperly classify an adult front seat passenger as a child or as an empty seat, a failure that could lead to an air bag failing to deploy in the event of a crash. Nissan has reports of three injuries linked to the issue but no fatalities.

The new recall includes vehicles from the 2013-2017 model years, including some Nissan Altima, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Sentra, Rogue, NV200, NV Taxi, Infiniti JX35/QX60, and Q50. It also includes the 2015-2016 Chevrolet City Express, built for General Motors Co by Nissan."

Nissan to recall 3.5 million cars to fix airbag sensor

DETROIT — Nissan said Friday it will recall 3.53 million vehicles worldwide to fix airbag sensors that could malfunction because they don't correctly classify a passenger.

The automaker said the recall includes the 2013-17 Nissan Altima, LEAF, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Sentra, Rogue, NV200/Chevrolet City Express/Taxi, Infiniti JX35/QX60 and Q50.

The recall includes 3.1 million vehicles in the U.S. and about 320,000 vehicles outside of the U.S.

Nissan said it will either reprogram or replace the sensors, which are located in the seat frame.

Customers affected by the recall will receive initial notification letters that will be followed by another letter when a remedy is available in their area.

According to Reuters, this is the fourth recall since 2013 to address problems with Nissan's occupant classification systems, which may fail to properly identify an adult front-seat passenger. The system may improperly classify a passenger as a child or as an empty seat and could lead to an airbag failing to deploy in the event of a crash.
