Fuel Gauge anomaly

Folks,

Just noticed something weird yesterday. On my QX60 I have been getting consistent 22.2 to 22.6 miles/gallon average with BP Premium fuel (mixed city/highway driving). I also normally fill up when my guage is around 1/4 tank mark. Yesterday when I was exiting the highway, I looked at my fuel guage and it was at the 1/4 mark. I came up to a STOP light and all of a sudden my "Fuel Low" indicator popped up and my fuel guage went from 1/4 full to past the Red Mark to empty. I had the dash display set to indicate miles driven, miles to empty etc. and just before this happened it said 56 miles to empty, but all of a sudden it went down to 0 and then --. The car still continued to drive and I stopped at the Gas Station that I normally fill gas and I filled 16.801 gallons of fuel. I believe the fuel tank capacity is around 19.5 gallons ... so just curious if I have a bad fuel guage sensor or is this just a one off thing?

Anyone else observed anything similar to this?

Thanks!

When you exited, was is up hill? Sometimes when you are going up hill the 2-3 gallons you have will go to the back of the tank and if the sensor is in the front, it will think the tank is empty.
Actually the exit is a little bit downhill ... not many hills in FL .. its all flat here :)
On the early model JX, there was a recall for the fuel line re-route issue and re-calibration on the fuel gage. Had ours done and haven't experienced any issues with it so far. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem since then. Wondering if the fuel gage sensor needs to be re-calibrated?
I did not experience the anomaly as noted by fljoemon, but I do notice when I get down to a quarter tank, the miles to empty seems to stay fixed for quite a while, like 34 miles in my last trip and then suddenly jumped down low to 10 and the fuel gauge drops to almost empty - a bit abrupt, not a smooth transition.
^Hmm I haven't had any issues with my '14 QX60 yet but like BobOB said - there was a recall on the 2013 JX's. I notice that my fuel light comes on right at the 1/8th mark which seems to early for it to come on - but I filled up about 65 - 66L today (17.3 gallons) right after the light came on - which is interesting because when the light comes on in my M35x (exact same fuel capacity), I only fill up around 58L (15.3 gallons)
So I have been experiencing a few strange things with the gas gauge as well. When I get down to about 40 miles remaining, the Low Fuel light comes on as expected. And once I get down to about 10 miles, it begins to state ----.
All well and good, but then three times now after showing ----, suddenly I will look down and it will show 42 Miles Remaining and start to decrement from there. No rhyme or reason, no hill (either up or down - I live in Texas!) and the fact that it continues to decrement from 42 properly w/o jumping back down to empty is concerning. In addition, when it jumps back up to 42, the gas gauge itself jumps back up to nearly a ¼ tank. I haven't taken the chance to see how far it goes down before I run out of gas, as it previously showed less than 10 miles.
Another thing that happened this past Saturday is that I'm sure I have 50+ miles remaining and I was sitting in a CVS drive-thru, with no hill, when my Low Fuel light came on and it showed ----- miles to go. I had to quickly find a gas station as I had no idea how many miles I really had to go. After reading the posts above, I regret that I didn't think to see how many gallons I put into it with each fill-up (duh!), but something I will look at next time.
I dropped it off at the dealer and they just called me to say they recreated the first issue, but after talking to Infiniti, it's a design issue and there is nothing they can do to fix it. :(
Time for me to take it to another dealer and maybe do so complaining.

Ever since I had the JX fuel line issue taken care of with the recalibration of the sensor, I have found that the gage and miles to empty are pretty accurate. Tonight I had the warning come on at 40 miles to empty and filled up at 33 miles to empty. Filled the tank with 18 gallons. Currently I'm getting about 19.6 mpg in mixed driving. On our cross country 8500 mile trip, I found the gage and miles to empty to be reliable. I just hate it when the miles to empty goes to ---. Just don't want to be to far from a gas station at that point.
Yeah, I hate it when it goes to --- as well when there's 10 or 13 miles left I think. But the navi screen goes --- even sooner I think.
Last fill up I actually did 19.4 gallons.
I have never found fuel gauges to be very accurate

In any of the cars I've owned.
My M is pretty bad for accuracy of gauge, but very predictable. I rode on empty (needle at E) with *** miles to go, and I still only filled up no more than 18 gallons... However, my M is dead on for mpg measurement.

The QX is getting more and more accurate now for mpg - but the gauge itself doesn't move linearly below 1/2 tank - it takes 350km (220 miles) to get to 1/2 and then within 200 km (122 miles) it goes down to below 1/4 and light comes on (give or take a few miles)

I have had this issue repeatedly. My fuel gauge will swing dramatically high or low. My QX60 has spent 6 days at the dealer and they do not have a solution. The factory here in Tennessee had the dealer perform lots of tests, but has not worked out a solution.

I have been told by the dealer that Infiniti recognizes some of these vehicles have fuel gauge issues but they do not yet know how to correct it. My dealer has told me that there is one other person they have sold to who has the exact same issue.

I suspect there will be a recall at some point.
So. In October of 2013. We bought the qx60 Infiniti. We noticed right away that our fuel gauge had huge daily fluctuations. In the morning we would have 7/8 full and after a 7 mile trip my wife makes to work it would be a 1/4. At the end of a work day,she would start the car and it would be at 3/4. Pulling in the drive way. (7 miles again) low fuel light on. We have had the vehicle at pepe Infiniti 4 times with the same issue. I have demanded each time a different part be replaced and each time it hasn't fixed the issue. An Infiniti consumer affairs agent reached out to us to let is know it's an design flaw. I did not accept this as an answer, we are now in full blown lemon law proceeding. When Infiniti writes us a check for all of our down payment plus lease payments plus 130% for time and aggravation(which lemon law allows) I will gladly share this with anyone who wants it!
I'm willing to help others with our precedent only because Infiniti has fought us tooth and nail and something they should have stood behind to begin with.

My wife bought a new QX60 in April, I have noticed a similar issue with the fuel gauge on occasion. It seems to jump around between appearing totally empty to 1/4 tank. Think we will call the the dealer and see what they have to say. Interesting to see there are others with similar issues.
I have had my QX 60 since Sept. and my digital gas gauge has alway been inconsistent. The gauge will read 77 miles left and then change to 120 miles left and then drop to 50 miles left in a short time frame. It has been frustrating, but the dealership said they had had no other complaints and that they noted my problem in their system. They said as of now they would have no way to fix the problem.
I noticed the other day my gas guage was showing completely full after having driven over 150 miles. This was when I was driving in a hilly area to the neighbourhood shopping area. On the way back, the guage was showing 3/4 full... weird

Hi. Our qx60 is feb 2014 production which we picked up march 2014 first week from alta infiniti in Woodbridge Ontario. With 3000km on it at present we are experiencing inaccurate fuel readings aswell. It fluctuates often. Yesterday we called alta Infiniti in Woodbridge Ontario and explained them the situation. They booked an appointment for next day and told us they will run diagnostic which will take them 1 hour. This morning when we arrived at alta Infiniti, lady at service desk told us Infiniti is aware of this issue and there is nothing we can do today, we will get back to you in 4 weeks time. I was like when we called yesterday and explained you guys the situation you would have told us over the phone about this.

Basically they wasted our time and by calling Infiniti personal assistance we filled a complaint about this fuel Gauge fluctuation issue. Let's see if Infiniti gets back to us.
Still no fix

I was told by my dealer that there was a software fix Infiniti had developed, and they were awaiting approval from the federal officials. I have to say I have really lost faith in Infiniti over this, which is a shame as this is my third Infiniti.
I noticed something funny going on with my fuel gauge as well. The low fuel went on at 1/8 of a tank, before even touching the red. I only ended up filling up 16.9 gallons with about 20 left till empty.. strange

How many miles does it give you for a full tank? mine started off saying I had 299 till empty
My fuel gauge will show FULL and say 430 miles to empty. But I still get variations. Yesterday while I left home it say it was 3/4 full and 350 miles to empty. 5 minutes into the drivem it said fule tank was full and 416 miles to empty .. so really fluctuates. I think we might need to call the main Infiniti number and complain .. dealer has been totally useless on this issue.
