Planned to use my QX60 (2019) to tow a rental Airstream Basecamp 16' (GVWR only 3,500 lbs) but the owner urged me to install a brake controller. According to the manual, the QX60's towing capacity is 5k lbs. Is it really necessary to install a brake controller in order to tow a 3500 lbs trailer? Thanks.

Yes, campers are heavy.

More importantly, you need to make sure:

1) The Gross Weight of the vehicle, (you, passengers, luggage + the trailer) is under the vehicle gross weight limit
2) The trailer tongue weight is less than the vehicle limit
3 The trailer with all supplies (camping gear, propane, water, dishes, bedding, food, etc.) is under 5000 lbs

Else, you could damage the transmission and void your warranty. Hopefully where you are renting the trailer will have a scale where you can verify you are under the vehicle weight limit.
