Body Rust?

Folks,

had some really nice weather this weekend and it was time to wash off the road salt from the previous week. When I did, this time, I noticed two rust spots at the corner of the rear chrome trim where it meets the hatch body.
I've uploaded three photos. The first shows the location on the right. The next two are closeups of that spot and the one on the left corner, too.

I did clean the area, well, and it sure seems like rust. I "poked" at it with a rag-wrapped screwdriver to see if it was just dirt that would come off, but it did not. Never been in an accident and this car is just turning one year old in April. I expect this form Cadillac, but Infiniti? :D

I'm more curious if this is a common problem or not before I head to my dealer.

That definitely isn't supposed to happen on a vehicle as new as this is, I would consider taking it back to the dealership. Getting them to replace the whole rear hatch is the best thing to do, rust is like cancer and might reappear years later if they just fix what's here.

Keep us posted on how things go

May I ask if you have rust proof and undercoat for the car? I just bought my QX60 for 1+ week. I am planning to bring it back to dealer for rust proof and undercoat. I am just wondering if the rust proof will help in this case.

I have my Toyota 4-Runner for 15 years, I only see a very tiny spot of rust that you have to look very carefully to find it. If Infiniti QX60 rusted in less than 1 year, that is definitely a concern. Please kindly share more details with us after your visit to the dealer.

I thought those were scams.

The QX60 has a 7 year/unlimited mile warranty against rust. They will fix the OP's car without question.

Rust after 1 year is typically related to a paint problem when applied at the factory. Take it back and get it fixed.
I'm going to take it in and, no, no need for added rust proofing. Can't believe they even still that garbage!
Yeller and bsnguy,

The Car sales man tried to sell me the rust proofing and undercoated. I didn't take the offer at that time. After a week or so, some of my friends are telling me that it is a good idea to have it. We live here in Canada and have a lot of salt on the road. Seriously, does rust proofing and undercoated really a scam? Anyone here has it for the QX60? If it is a scam, I will save a the $800 buck for something else.

Do not let the dealer spray it. you should use Krown rust control. cost 120.00 for SUV. once you spray it for the first 3 years. you can spray it every other year. Rust spray make a big different. especially in Canada. I am in Toronto
Hi TranCana,

Thanks for the response. You mean the dealer charged 6 times as much to do the same job as Krown? If so, I will definitely go with Krown.

bsnguy, sorry for hi-jacking your thread.

Except the Krown guys will drill holes everywhere .. was ok with my 2003 Accord but was hesitant to do so on JX35 :(
You get a 7 year unlimited mile warranty. I know salt beats the snot out of cars, but I doubt the "dealer-applied-spray" undercoating will last longer.

Why not save your money, and if it still bothers you after 6 years get the spray?

This is a known issue on the QX60 and JXs. I have the same problem but not as severe. The service advisor told me he knows what the problem is and will order the parts as needed.

Apparently the trim pieces are too sharp where they meet the body - therefore they scrape away the paint and thus produce rust behind the trim pieces. OR the trim pieces themselves rust but not the tail-gate. The newer trim pieces either have protection on the inside or are not as sharp.

Take it in to the dealer and they should know what to do. My service advisor took all of 2 seconds to see what I was pointing at and put it on his list as a parts order. It does take a day or two to change all the trim pieces on the tail-gate so they will schedule it when they can give you a loaner vehicle.

Mine was identified over a month ago now but haven't received a call yet about the parts - maybe they forgot :D or the parts are hard to get since a lot of QX/JX's will be needing this replacement.
You get a 7 year unlimited mile warranty.
For perforation... not surface rust. Already getting ready for a battle... Will see my dealer, in person, Wednesday morning. Will update.
The warranty kicks in ONLY if the rust causes a hole? Seems strange.

Let us know how it goes.

yes the Dealer charge 8 to 10 times more.
if you do not want Krown drilling the holes. you can remove the rear lenses so they can feed the nozzle through the rubber plugs to spray the panels.
life time warranty on rust spray or under coating is a scam from the dealer. The dealer said they do not warranty rust cause by salt. (who are they kidding. we live in canada)
this was what happen to my sister in law.
i do work for Krown. But have seen a big different when you spray the car.
unless you change vehicle every 4 years then you do not need to worry about it
Took the car to my dealer this morning. The service guy said he's seen this, before, and they will clean/repaint under warranty. Scheduling a loaner and such, so may be next week before it gets done, but that's fine.

To clear up the perforation issue... The 7 year corrosion warranty is only for perforation (common in the industry) but this surface rust on a painted area is covered by bumper to bumper warranty. On the phone, the guy I spoke to probably only heard "rust" and quoted me the perforation line without understanding what I was really telling him. So all is, probably, good.

Just to complete the thread... Got my car back, yesterday, and it looks good a new. Covered under bumper to bumper warranty.

And, yes, everyone in the shop knows about such issues. Strange that Infiniti can't get this right.

But, for now, all is good. Hoping for no such issues as time goes on.
Thats good to hear !!!
bsnguy, where do you live? I have a brand new 2014 QX60 where the paint has chipped but not yet rusted in the same spot. Our dealer said that had nothing to do with the trim piece and that they didn't know anything about that being the issue. They just touched it up. It would be nice if I could talk to your dealer's service advisor and get some information that I could relay to my dealer's service dept.

Thanks,
Rony
St. Louis. Plaza Infiniti is the dealer. I didn't notice any chips. Just rust after the winter. I do wash regularly but didn't notice until this last time. Touch up should be fine, but watch it, obviously.
