Hmmm.. 2017 Pathfinder or QX60

The changes made to the 2017 Pathfinder have improved its ranking on my shopping list from not found to between 1st or 2nd. So far I have test driven Volvo XC90, Lexus GX470, Audi Q7 and QX60. I need a practical 3rd row with easy access, which makes Q7 and GX470 easier drops from the list, and the Internet is filled with owners complaining about XC90's software and other issues, all of this left me with the only choice QX60. I currently own my 4th Nissan and love it, so I am happy staying in Nissan family.

I am trying to figure out the difference between QX60 and the 2017 Pathfinder.

The new PF has LED headlights which is great addition since the previous models only offered Halogen bulbs even in Platinum trim (one of the reasons for not considering it, aside from hideous looks). My desired panoramic moonroof is included in Platinum unlike QX60 which requires an otherwise unnecessary Delux-Tech Package to get the same, not to mention at $6900! At Platinum level or even with SL the PFs also come with tow hitch and wiring installed, compared to a DYI or dealer installed option for QX60 which cost another $800-1500.

The Infiniti has better warranty but with almost $8K-10K more, not that much appealing.

The looks are subjective QX60 definitely looks great no doubt about it, but the new PF looks good too, I can live with it 2016 sucked big time, but the minor improvements in front facia and hood in 2017 have increased its appeal.

So my question to the knowledgable folks out here is, what are some of things missing from PF that QX60 offers? Is it quieter than PF? How about leather/seats, are they more plush/comfortable? More importantly is the CVT same between the two? I understand QX60 offers more technology options like radar cruise control or pedestrian watch, lane control nannies, etc. , which i really don't care that much about. My must have options are heated steering wheel, seats and mirrors, tow hitch and panoramic moonroof. Put money aside for a moment what would be reasons to consider 2016/17 QX60 over 2017 Pathfinder Platinum? Another point to consider, I take frequent 1200 miles round trips with my family. We use our minivan which is great but is designed for fuel efficiency, i.e, is very loud inside and not that much comfortable for day long drive. I would prefer to have a comfortable 8-9 hour drive over 3-5MPG less.

Looking forward to reading everyone's comments!

We didn't test driven the PF. Heck, it wasn't even on our shopping list. My wife didn't care for it because of the looks. And it was a $10k in difference too. If were my choice, I'll probably still get the QX60. The lack of HID and safety features for a $45k car is absurd. And granted, our QX60 didn't have the deluxe package but the look and feel were enough reasons to get it. And plus we couldn't pass on the deal.

2017 QX60 vs 2017 PF

This is going to hard since the PF have upped its game. Both received more power(QX gets more due to fuel type maybe?) and have similar features. Yes, PF gets LED lights now.

Yes, I'm sorta having buyer remorse but not as much for the folks who bought the 2016 since the 2017 is coming up in a few months. Poor marketing planning by Nissan/Infiniti?

Yeah it seems like they rushed to release 2016 with those changes, the Direct Injected engine was probably having issues so it will be included now in 2017? A better strategy would have been introducing all new changes in QX60 first to up sell to the PF customers not the other way around, now I am searching for value, as the two vehicles are coming closer than ever. There are still many options missing from PF but unless you opt for Deluxe or Driver assistance package in the QX60 (which most people dont't) it becomes very comparable to new PF.

Can you get Backup Collision Intervention in the PF? If not, huge advantage to any QX60 with Driver Assistance package.

Quieter? Yes.
Better Leather and other touch materials? Yes.
Better warranty? Yes.
Service Loaners? Yes.
Better looks? Subjective.

No the PF doesn't offer any of the advanced interventions. I think the 2017 PF will get full range emergency braking (when moving forward) but not everything that QX has. I agree, the BCI definitely is great option. It has been over 10 years that I am using backup cameras in my vehicles and can't imagine how I used to blindly backup prior to that, same goes when I am in my wife's car with sonar sensors along with camera vs. my murano which only has the camera those sensors make a lot of difference even when you can view everything in the camera, that extra sense of sonar can view more!

Thanks for your feedback!

The safety nannies are great but I think we're getting near the point of too much safety net. I always tell folks if you like those auto-pilot found in Tesla, go get a cab. Or Lyft or Uber. Clearly driving is a big hindrance for you. A backup camera or AVM is good enough for us. That said, the PF was more than enough but the styling and lack of features (HID, leather, warranty, dealer relations etc) warrant our QX purchase.

I agree 100% i don't care for radar cruise controls, lane departure, blind spot etc. however, I don't mind when it comes to backing up, the more "eyes" i can get to see what is behind the better. the new PF looks good, but I think QX still has the upper hand. I will test drive PF just for fun, but i think i will go with QX, not sure 2016 or 17 yet. choices!

As one of the first owners of the JX who just traded it in with 51,000 trouble free miles for a fully loaded 2016 QX60, I'd say hands down the QX60 is your best value. I've driven the Pathfinder Platinum and liked it, but there is a huge difference in quality. I agree with Sinecure's comments. Yes he is a top Infiniti salesman, but he knows the Infiniti brand very well as well as whats out there.

I was hesitant to purchase it since the 2017 is coming out soon. It sounds like there will be a change in the navigation/infotainment system similar to whats coming out on the QX30. There should be an optional engine which is probably what is going to be in the new Pathfinder. I don't think there will be many other changes since the 2016 model has several changes already.

What I've noticed so far is, better handling, a bit better fuel economy, a bit quieter and the new LED daytime running lights and grill with turn signal lights on the mirrors make the car look very nice. They put a slight shroud on the outside edge on each mirror which cuts off the glare reflection I had on the JX. Also, one of our original members was on the Infiniti focus group and the list of items he brought out had a large number of items changed on the new models. My only complaint is that for those sitting in the second row seats, if the passenger in the front doesn't have their seat in a higher position, you have reduced room for sticking your feed under it. For most people its not an issue. If I'm sitting in the back seat (and I have size 14 feet and am 6'1"), it really doesn't bother me.

As for my decision to trade in, I was very leery of my dealership. They recently updated the facility to Infiniti's standards and they went with a no commission sales approach. Our original salesman is now a sales manager. He was incredible to work with back in 2012. He assigned an Infiniti Product Specialist to escort us and show us everything. No pressure, and brute honesty. Our sales manager gave us exactly what we asked for in trade-in and gave us the best price possible for our region. I did like the changes at the dealership.

If we were closer to the Bay Area, I would without a doubt purchase our cars at Peninsula Infiniti in Redwood City and would chose our other moderator who's forum tag is Sinecure. Your not going to find anyone in sales anywhere the way he knows the Infiniti brand. Trust me, I can't find an Infiniti forum that he hasn't got his fingers in. Most sales people don't keep track of their product the way he does.

Thats my 2 cents worth.

BobOB thanks for sharing your experience and advice. I am on the opposite end of the country, Long Island. The good thing is that when I search 100 mile radius I find 925 QX60s in stock, and several with exact same configuration I am looking for. I hope I will find a dealership with similar experience as yours, that will make shopping much more delightful. That's one thing I don't understand, when people say they had great dealership experience, I find all dealerships the same, luxury or not. Even when you use programs like Costco or True Car there are surprises and lies etc.

Are you near New Jersey? Circle Infiniti seems to be a high volume dealership. We purchased our Infiniti Warranty from them for the JX when our dealership didn't offer it. Sheri in Finance still works there. They just seemed like a good dealership.
